The buck was checking the scent of the doe to see if she was ready to rut. They were beautifully set up in an area of yellowed autumn grass in front of a stand of trees, with more grass beyond when I saw them. I invented the pattern of spots on his back, based on how I remember the way they are usually distributed on their bodies. The doe was a nondescript cream but I thought the pink colour I gave her worked better with the yellows. She has not complained!
