Staying on the Mar Estate I watched red deer cross the Dee and mount the bank on our side of the river. On the other side the land is flat, the “braes” of Mar, but on our side the river has cut into the hillside to make a steep bank up which I imagined the deer climbing. They have worn a scrape into the bank and work their way through heather bushes. Near the shore it is shallow enough for rocks to show up in the stream, letting me invent patterns of water flowing round them.
